Biography of Yoko Ono

Yoko Ono, a Japanese artist and the wife of John Lennon, was born on February 18, 1933 in Tokyo. Her father, before starting his banking career, was a pianist, while her aristocratic mother came from a wealthy family. Yoko considers her passion for art as a reaction to her mother's devotion to material possessions and wealth.

Marriages and Relationships

Yoko was previously married to a Japanese man and later married American jazz musician and film producer, Anthony Cox. From this marriage, she had a daughter named Kyoko in 1963. When she met Lennon in 1966 at the London art salon "Indica," Yoko was still legally married to Cox. Lennon financially supported her personal exhibition and divorced his first wife, Cynthia, in November 1968. On March 20, 1969, Lennon and Yoko registered their marriage in Gibraltar.

Creative Collaboration and Activism

In November 1966, Lennon's first solo album with Yoko Ono was released, which was musically distinct from his work with The Beatles, sparking outrage among Beatles fans worldwide. At that time, Lennon, likely influenced by Yoko Ono, attempted to express his perspective on life through "quasi-musical means." During the same period, the couple embarked on their first political action: a "bed-in for peace" protest against European countries' involvement in the Vietnam War, held at the Amsterdam Hilton.

In 1970, Lennon officially left the band and focused on his solo work, largely in collaboration with his second wife. They produced the avant-garde film "Apotheosis," which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1971. Lennon and Yoko actively collaborated with left-wing radicals in the United States and released their most politically engaged album, "Some Time In New York City."

Family and Tragic Loss

On October 9, 1975, Yoko gave birth to their son, Sean Ono Lennon, on John Lennon's birthday. The musician temporarily halted his creative pursuits and dedicated his time exclusively to his family until 1979. In September 1980, Lennon and Yoko signed a contract with the new label Geffen, and on November 15, 1980, Lennon's final album during his lifetime, "Double Fantasy," was released. Tragically, on December 8, 1980, he was shot and killed by Mark Chapman, a deranged fan.

Legacy

Following Lennon's death, Yoko Ono focused on releasing unpublished materials from his life, including music recordings, videos, and notes. She played a significant role in preserving and promoting Lennon's artistic legacy.
