Biography of Roberto Rossellini

Roberto Rossellini was an Italian film director, known as one of the most significant figures of the Italian neorealism cinematic movement. He was born into a bourgeois family in Rome. His father was responsible for constructing the first cinema in Rome, which granted young Roberto unlimited free access to movies. During his youth, Rossellini worked in various positions related to film production, gaining extensive experience in different areas of the industry. His brother, Renzo Rossellini, composed music for many of his films.

Early Career

In 1938, Rossellini directed his first documentary, followed by his first feature film in 1941. Some of his films were influenced by his personal experiences during World War II and its aftermath, such as "Rome, Open City," "Germany, Year Zero," and "L'Amore."

The Ingrid Bergman Affair

In 1948, Rossellini received a letter from Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman, offering to collaborate with him on his films. The following year, they began working together on the film "Stromboli," with Bergman in the lead role. This marked the beginning of one of the most famous love stories in cinema. The relationship between Rossellini and Bergman caused a scandal due to their respective marriages. The scandal intensified when they had children together, including their well-known daughter, Isabella Rossellini. Roberto also had two sons from his previous marriage.

Later Years and Death

In the late 1950s, Rossellini and Bergman separated, and shortly before that, Rossellini had another affair while filming in India. Roberto Rossellini passed away from a heart attack in Rome in 1977 at the age of 71.
